Hey there, wedding-planning couple that found my blog! It's time to discuss the most important aspect of your big day: the music. (I know, the photos and drinks are also pretty important) Now, I know you want to choose songs that are special and meaningful to you and your partner. But we have six hours of music to think about! Before you start creating your ultimate wedding playlist, let's talk about why it's also important to consider the music preferences of your guests.
Your cousin is from Atlanta and loves Migos and Johnny Cash. You grew up in California and prefer Too $hort and newer country. This is about why selecting music for your wedding should be inclusive.
I get it. Your cousin grew up on the east coast. He loves southern rap, doesn't know what hyphy means, and thinks the Thizzle Dance is something you do while cooking breakfast. But you're family, you love each other, and you are preparing for a great dance party with all your friends and family on the dance floor. You should really consider letting your DJ slide in a chorus and verse from "Walk it, Talk it." Why? Love conquers dislike. And honesty, you probably won't even notice, but your cousin will, and he'll love it.
Music your guests love. Why should you play some of it.
First, you want to ensure everyone feels included and welcomed at your wedding. Choosing music that caters to different styles and preferences ensures that everyone has a good time and feels part of the celebration. Trust me; you don't want to leave your metalhead cousin or your country-loving aunt feeling left out. I promise to find a smooth way to incorporate many different popular styles throughout your day. Party vibes no matter what when selecting music for your wedding.
Another reason to consider your guests' music preferences is that it can help create a more “funner” party. If you want people to hit the dance floor and bust some moves, you must pick songs to get them in the mood. And let's face it; even the most enthusiastic dancers might want to be surprised with a fresh remix or a 90s throwback.
Of course, choosing music that your guests enjoy can also prevent any awkward moments. Imagine you're in the middle of your reception and suddenly realize you're the only one on the dance floor. What? About seven years ago, I accepted a client who, later in the planning, insisted I only play music she and her partner wanted. Once the reception started, people were standing around, more like a listening party. Her mom approached my DJ booth (who paid for the wedding) and said, “you have my permission to play what you want.” The crisis was averted, and the party finally popped off! By selecting a mix of more universally appealing songs to start the dance party, you can avoid uncomfortable moments when your guests feel out of place or unsure what to do.
As the night progresses, I’ll have gained the trust of the more traditional guests (parents, grandparents, cousins from Kentucky, etc.), which gives me the freedom to rock the party with your favorite styles of music.
